Round dies for cutting external thread

A thread cutting die cuts external thread on a bar, bolt or tube, by hand in a die stock or under power in a holder on the lathe. The round form to DIN EN 22568 is the standard: the die clamps in the holder and the chamfered lead pulls itself square onto the workpiece, so the thread does not start off crooked.

Establish the thread form first. Coarse metric covers everyday work, fine metric is used where you want finer adjustment or where the wall thickness leaves little room, and beside those there are versions for inch thread. The outside diameter of the die then has to match your holder, since a 25 mm die will not clamp in a holder made for a smaller size.

Preparation decides how the thread starts. Turn or file a light chamfer on the end and use cutting oil, otherwise the first turn tears out and the die seizes. In tough materials, back off a quarter turn now and again to break the chip.

For internal thread use a machine tap or a hand tap.
